The population included 9 villagers, 11 smallholders (middle level of serf below a villager), and 13 slaves. Ocle Pichard derived its additional name from a family which arrived soon after the Norman Conquest.

The name may derive from “Ulla ingas wic”, where Ulla was the name of an Anglo-Saxon chief. St Luke’s church has a Norman nave, 13th century chancel and Victorian porch and bell tower.
