Long Burton is a tithing of the larger medieval parish of Long Burton. Medieval records show that Longburton belonged to the See of Sarum. The name derives from burg, a fortified manor, and tun, a homestead or village. The present form of the name as a single word seems to have arisen in late nineteenth century.

Longburton geography / climate

Longburton village is a ribbon development along the A352 road, which was the turnpike between Dorchester and Sherborne. The surrounding landscape is typical Dorset pasture with small fields divided by hedgerows and small patches of woodland. The underlying geology of the vicinity is Oxford Clay, which results in moist and fertile soil that yields rich dairy pastures.

Haydon, Dorset Haydon is a village and civil parish 16 miles (26 km) north of Dorchester, in the Dorset district of Dorset. In 2001 the parish had a population of 44. The parish touches Castleton, Caundle Marsh, Folke, Goathill and North Wootton.
