In the early 18th century the Honourable John Fane – later 7th Earl of Westmoreland inherited the manor. Mereworth Castle then overlooked the village, so Fane had the village moved so that it couldn’t be seen from the estate. He also demolished the church, providing the villagers with a new Palladian-style replacement, now dedicated to St Lawrence.

Old County Ground The Old County Ground is cricket ground, located at West Malling, historically called Town Malling in Kent. Known under various names throughout its existence, the ground hosted 14 first-class cricket matches between 1836 and 1890. It is known to have been used for cricket matches in 1705.
