Woolfords was built to house the mineworkers for the coal, lime and shale mines of Cobbinshaw, Tarbrax and Baads Mill. US Air Force Airmen were stationed at Royal Air Force (RAF) Kirknewton, about 10 miles away. They were attracted to the inexpensive rent when compared to Edinburgh.
