Widdrington Village history
The area was the seat of the Widdrington family. In 1642, William Widdington raised forces in support of Charles I, who elevated him to the new title of Baron Widrington. After the defeat of the Royalist forces in the North, he fled and his estates were confiscated by Parliament. He returned to support Charles II, but was slain at the Battle of Wigan Lane.

Chibburn Preceptory
Chibburn Preceptory was first recorded in 1313. It was abolished in 1540 when all its lands were passed to the Crown and later the Widdrington family. The preceptory was razed by French invaders in 1691.
