Whitwell was part of the fee of the Constables whose manor was at Constable Burton. Around 1240 a mesne lordship was granted to Jollan de Nevill. Other landowners included the Staveley family who claimed land in 1272. At the end of the 17th century, the Whitwell family owned the manor.

Streetlam Streetlam is situated 6 miles (9.7 km) northwest of Northallerton. The population fluctuates around 25 people. The main local industry is farming, but many people base themselves locally and commute to work in neighbouring population centres.
