Wentworth gained some independence when the Fitzwilliam family line ended in 1979. The village dates back to at least 1066, according to the Domesday Book. Wentworth, Watson-Wentworth and Wentworth-Fitzwilliam families owned perhaps most of the land in the village.

Lundhill Colliery explosion The Lundhill Colliery explosion took place on 19 February 1857 in Wombwell, Yorkshire, UK. 189 men and boys aged between 10 and 59 died. It was the first disaster to appear on the front page of the Illustrated London News.
