Situated in the valley of the River Mimram, Welwyn has hosted human activity since the Palaeolithic. Settlement across the area seems to have become established during the Bronze Age. The Belgae Celtic culture colonised much of South-Eastern England in the 1st Century BC, with Welwyn in the area believed to have been settled by the Catuvellauni tribe. The area was a known fording point across the river from Roman times when the Roman road was laid out.

Welwyn etymology

The name is derived from Old English welig meaning “willow” referring to the trees that nestle on the banks of the River Mimram as it flows through the village. The name itself is an evolution from weligun, the dative form of the word, and so is more precisely translated as “at the willows”

Digswell House Digswell House was built c. 1805–07 by Samuel Wyatt for the Honourable Edward Spencer Cowper, who lived there for some years. It is now in the Knightsfield area of Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire. A portico, with four massive Ionic columns, is its most impressive external feature.

Old St Lawrence Church, Ayot St Lawrence Old St Lawrence Church is a Grade II* listed building in Ayot St Lawrence, Hertfordshire. It dates back to the 12th century and was partially demolished in 1775 by Sir Lionel Lyde, 1st Baronet. It was replaced as the village’s parish church by a neoclassical structure.

New St Lawrence Church, Ayot St Lawrence St Lawrence Church is an eighteenth-century neoclassical church in Ayot St Lawrence, Hertfordshire. It is also known as New St. Lawrence Church to distinguish it from the ruined Old St Lawrence church.

Howard Centre The Howard Centre is a shopping centre in Welwyn Garden City. It is named after Sir Ebenezer Howard, founder of the garden city movement.

Welwyn Garden City railway station Welwyn Garden City is 20 miles 25 chains (32.69 km) from London King’s Cross on the East Coast Main Line. Train services are currently provided by Thameslink and Great Northern.

Lemsford Lemsford is a village and parish in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire. It was created in 1858 out of Hatfield parish. It is nearly 3 miles north of the town, on the southeast side of Brocket Hall Park. The yearly Lemford Fete garners thousands of visitors.

Homewood, Knebworth Homewood is a Grade II* listed country house in Knebworth, Hertfordshire. Designed and built by architect Edwin Lutyens around 1900–3, using a mixture of vernacular and Neo-Georgian architecture. The gardens are Grade II listed in the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.
