Waterstock’s toponym is derived from the Old English for “Waterplace” The village’s single street is flanked by cottages built of stone or local brick. In 1279 there were probably about 200 inhabitants, but after the Black Death the population decreased to 51.

Beatrix Havergal established the Waterperry School of Horticulture, a school of horticulture for ladies, from 1932 until her retirement in 1971. In 1972 the School of Economic Science purchased the estate, including the gardens. The Museum of Rural Life is located in an 18th-century granary building, with displays of implements and tools.

Rycote House was first built in the early 16th century. The present site was rebuilt in the 1920s. The main wing has two storeys with attics and a 4-centre arched entrance.
