Waterford history
Viking raiders first established a settlement near Waterford in 853. The name ‘Waterford’ comes from Old Norse Veðrafjǫrðr ‘ram (wether) fjord’ The name is Port Láirge, meaning “Lárag’s port”

There are three theatre companies, Red Kettle, Spraoi and Waterford Youth Arts. Barrack Street Concert Band established in 1870 and is one of the only bands in Ireland to have unbroken service through a civil war and two World Wars.
