Waresley history


Waresley was listed in the Domesday Book in the Hundred of Toseland in Huntingdonshire in 1086. The name of the settlement was written as Wederesle, Wedreslei and Wedreresleie. The annual rent paid to the lords of the manors in 1066 had been £10.5 and the rent had fallen to £8.6 in the 1086 survey. By 1086 there was already a church and a priest at the settlement.

Waresley Wood, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, is managed as a nature reserve by the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire. The former deer park was landscaped by the 18th Century designer Humphry Repton.
