Wanstrow history

The name of the village comes from the Old English and means Waendel’s tree. The Bishop of Wells had an estate in the parish before the Norman Conquest which supported a prebend at Wells Cathedral. The village was involved in the production of coarse earthenware using clay dug on Wanstrow Common.

The manor house was built in the 17th century and has been designated as a Grade II* listed building. It was designated as an important Grade II listed building in the 16th century.

Wanstrow geography / climate

Cloford Quarry is a geological Site of Special Scientific Interest and Geological Conservation Review site. It is important for the exposures of sediments of Triassic and Jurassic age which occur in major fissures within the Carboniferous Limestone. No other site in Britain shows such a variety and abundance of sediment-infilled fissure of this age.

Church of St Mary, Cloford The Church of St Mary in Cloford, Wanstrow, Somerset was built in the 15th century. It is a Grade II* listed building.

Torr Works Torr Works quarry, grid reference ST695446 is a limestone quarry at East Cranmore, near Shepton Mallet, Somerset. The quarry was formerly known as Merehead, a name which has been retained for its rail depot on the opposite side of the A361 road.
