Upton, West Yorkshire history


The name literally means Higher Town and is recorded as Uptune, Uptone and Opton in old documents. Historically, the village was in the wapentake of Osgoldcross and the parish of Badsworth. In 1885, the Hull and Barnsley Railway opened a railway station at the south end of the village. Upton Colliery was opened in 1924, but was closed in 1964 due to geological faulting.

Moorthorpe railway station was opened in May 1879, jointly by the Midland Railway and North Eastern Railway. It lies on the Wakefield Line and the Dearne Valley Line, 18+1/4 miles (29.4 km) north of Sheffield. A short chord was also built to link the S&K Joint line with the main Doncaster to Leeds line at South Kirkby Junction.
