Upottery history


Parts of the parish church of St Mary the Virgin date from the 12th century. The Viscounts Portman held the manor house and main lands here for about two centuries. In 1934 inherited a property in Wiltshire which they substituted for this home.

Mohuns Ottery was a seat of the Carew family from the 14th to the 16th centuries. The old manor house burnt down in 1868 and was completely rebuilt as a farmhouse. The ruins of a mid-16th century gatehouse lie to the south of the house. In January 2014 the house with 228 acres was offered for sale for £3.5 million.
