First mention of Upavon is in the 1086 Domesday Book as Oppavrene. Occupation of the area dates back to the Iron Age and Romano-British settlement at Casterley Camp, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) southwest of the current village.

Chisenbury Camp
Chisenbury Camp is the site of an Iron Age univallate hillfort in Wiltshire. The site comprises a small circular 5-acre enclosure that was levelled in 1931. There were finds of ceramics, worked stone, worked animal bone and remains of human burial.
