There is no independent record of Tunstall in the Domesday Book; it is believed to have formed part of the lands of Richard the forester, centred on Thursfield. Tunstall, Bemersley, Burslem, Chatterley, Chell, Oldcott, and Thursfield are mentioned as distinct manors or vills. The appointment of a market-reeve by the manor court in 1525 is the earliest indication that a market in Tunstall manor was held. The town was granted urban district status in 1894 and quickly set about expanding itself.
