Townhill Park history


Townhill Park was granted to Sir William Paulet by Henry VIII in 1536 after the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The land was mainly used for farming, but was purchased by Nathaniel Middleton in 1787. Townhill Farm was purchased in 1897 by Samuel Montagu, 1st Baron Swaythling, for his son Louis. The Montagu family lived there until the mid-1940s. 294 acres (1.19 km) of land were sold to Southampton Borough Council for housing. The remaining 30 acres of land became a school for underprivileged girls, owned by Middlesex County Council.
