The village (parish) church is said to have been founded by St. Ninian in about 400AD, a small wooden structure on the site of the present church. Knights Hospitaller of St. John made their Scottish headquarters at Torphichen in 1165. By 1756, part of the old structure of the Preceptory was altered to allow the creation of a new parish church for local residents. The 18th century creation of the parish church also included the addition of a belfry tower.

Torphichen geography / climate

The village is located in the Central Belt of Scotland adjacent to the nearby Torphichen and Bathgate hills. The Cunnigar is a natural feature on the edge of the village, said to be the depression from the remains of a well that served the knights at the preceptory.

Bridge Castle Bridge Castle is an L-plan castle dating from the 16th century. It is located 3 miles (4.8 km) north west of Bathgate in West Lothian, Scotland. The former name of the castle was Little Brighouse.

Cockleroi Cockleroi or Cockleroy is a prominent hill in Scotland. It is Linlithgow’s local hill. On its top there are some remains of an Iron Age’s hill fort.

Cairnpapple Hill Cairnpapple Hill is a hill with a dominating position in central lowland Scotland with views from coast to coast. It was used and re-used as a major ritual site over about 4000 years. The summit lies 312 m above sea level, and is about 2 miles (3 km) north of Bathgate.

Muiravonside Country Park Muiravonside Country Park is 170 acres of woodland and parkland open to the public all year round. It is situated in the south-east corner of Falkirk (council area), approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) south of Maddiston.
