It was rebuilt in 1688 by Charles Seymour, 6th Duke of Somerset, and altered in the 1870s to the design of the architect Anthony Salvin. Coultershaw Bridge is a rural community 1.5 mi (2.4 km) south of Petworth in West Sussex. There were also wharves and a lock on the Rother Navigation between 1792 and 1888. Until the 1970s, a water mill stood on the river housing a beam engine which was installed in 1782 by the 3rd Earl of Egremont to pump water from the river to Petworth and his home at Petworth House.
