Domesday Book of 1086 records Steeple Aston as Estone, derived from East Tun meaning “east village” By 1220 it was Stipelestun, with the “steeple” prefix probably referring to the church tower. RAF Upper Heyford was a Royal Air Force station located 5 miles (8 km) north-west of Bicester. In the Second World War the airfield was used by Bomber Command.
