Historic boundaries of Staffordshire cover much of what is now the metropolitan county of West Midlands. Historically, Staffordshire was divided into five hundreds: Cuttlestone, Offlow, Pirehill, Seisdon, and Totmonslow. In 1553, Queen Mary made Lichfield a county corporate, meaning it was administered separately from the rest of the county. Staffordshire has a thin protrusion passing between the county boroughs and Shropshire, to the west, to form a short border with Worcestershire.

Staffordshire is home to the highest village in Britain, Flash. The village, in the Staffordshire Moorlands, stands at 1,519 ft (463 m) above sea level. The highest point in the county is Cheeks Hill.

Chartley Castle Chartley Castle lies in ruins to the north of the village of Stowe-by-Chartley in Staffordshire. The remains of the castle and associated earthworks are a Scheduled Monument. The castle itself is a Grade II* listed building.

Tixall Gatehouse Tixall Gatehouse was used as a prison for Mary, Queen of Scots for two weeks in 1586. The gatehouse is a Grade I listed building.

Staffordshire County Museum Staffordshire County Museum is housed in the Servants’ Quarters of Shugborough Hall, Milford, near Stafford, England. It features a restored Victorian kitchen, laundry and brewhouse as well as permanent galleries and temporary exhibitions.

Shugborough inscription The Shugborough Inscription is a sequence of letters – O U O S V A V V, between the letters D M – carved on the 18th-century Shepherd’s Monument. It has never been satisfactorily explained, and has been called one of the world’s top uncracked ciphertexts.
