The Plough pub at Southolt Green opened in the 17th century and closed about 1990. John Speed recorded the village on his 1610 map as “Southold” Southolt’s population declined greatly in the 20th century, and is now fewer than 70.

Kenton is 1.9 miles to the north-east of Debenham, in 2005 its population was 170. The name Kenton comes from the Old English for ‘Kingly’, or ‘Royal’ and can trace its origins back to before the Norman conquest. Between 1908 and 1952 the village was served by the Mid-Suffolk Light Railway.
