Early origins

Historically the name ‘Shepley’ derives from Old English sceap (‘sheep’) and leah (‘clearing’) meaning ‘a clearing or meadow where sheep are kept’ However, Shepley is also situated on one of several local leys.

Norman conquest and medieval period

‘Sceaplei’ is mentioned in the Domesday Book, written in 1086. Shepley’s population suffered during William the Conqueror’s Harrying of the North 1069–1070.

19th century

In 1868 Shepley was described as a township and chapelry in the parish of Kirkburton, upper division of Agbrigg Wapentake, West Riding County York. The village was also recorded as having 30 tailor’s shops in a population of around 1,000. In the early 19th century, Sir Joseph Radcliffe from Milnsbridge House was Lord of the Manor.

Birdsedge (or Birds Edge) is a small village in the borough of Kirklees in West Yorkshire. It is on the edge of Yorkshire’s Pennine Hills, standing just below 1,000 feet (305 m) above sea level. A mill operates in the village, part of the Z Hinchliffe mill complex located in the nearby village of Denby Dale.

Founded in 1904, it expanded to over 3,000 patients during the Second World War. After the introduction of Care in the Community in the early 1980s, the hospital went into a period of decline and closed in 1992.
