The name of the settlement was recorded as Celdeslai in the Domesday Book, with the meaning of “Sceald’s clearing”: from Old English Sceald (a personal name) and leāh (wood, clearing) The addition of Walsh to the village’s name followed when members of the family became lord of the manor, the first of them being Sir Henry le Waleys in the time of King Edward I.
