A village dance was being held in the village hall when a bomb penetrated the roof of the hall. A farmer was killed in the attack on 11 March 1943. Rubber tubes were laid out on the opposite side of the Tyne Valley Line to the Church to make the Luftwaffe think it was a major railway sidings of Carlisle.
