Scawton was listed in the Domesday Book as belonging to Count Robert of Mortain. The name means farm in the hollow, where the word Skál means hollow. The land sits atop Hambleton Oolite, a white to grey fine ooidal limestone used for building houses and drystone walls in the area.

The site is a grass-covered terrace following a serpentine course across a wooded escarpment overlooking the ruins of the abbey. Rievaulx Abbey was one of the great abbeys in England until it was seized under Henry VIII of England in 1538. The wider site was awarded Scheduled Ancient Monument status in 1915. The abbey was brought into the care of the Ministry of Works in 1917.
