Scaleby history


Scaleby Castle is just 0.5 miles from the centre of the village. It is a grade II listed English Heritage building with blocks of dressed red sandstone that are thought to be from the nearby Hadrian’s Wall. The Castle still stands today although there are still signs of what the building has been through with three stories above the basement vault remaining ruined.

Kirklinton Middle is a civil parish in City of Carlisle district, Cumbria, England. At the 2011 census it had a population of 384. The parish is bordered to the north west by Arthuret, the boundary following the River Lyne.

Scaleby Castle was built in the early 14th century and extended in the 15th century. Parliamentary troops attacked the castle twice during the English Civil War, burning it. It was later restored to form a country house.
