The village was the administrative centre for HM Forestry Commission for many years following the planting of tens of thousands of trees in the Breckland area to form the Thetford Forest. The District office and staff were housed in 1960s office building close to the site of the now demolished Santon Downham Hall.

Thetford Forest Thetford Forest is the largest lowland pine forest in Britain. It is located in a region straddling the north of Suffolk and the south of Norfolk. It covers over 19,000 ha (47,000 acres) in the form of a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Grime’s Graves Grime’s Graves is a large Neolithic flint mining complex in Norfolk. It lies 8 km (5.0 mi) north east from Brandon, Suffolk in the East of England. The scheduled monument extends over an area of some 37 ha (91 acres) and consists of at least 433 shafts dug into the natural chalk to reach seams of flint. Flint was much in demand for making polished stone axes in the Neolithic period.
