Toponymy

Ruislip and Ickenham manors belonged to a Saxon named Wulfward White at the time of Edward the Confessor . He owned land in 11 counties and lost much of his land during the Norman conquest of England . Arnulf de Hesdin took control of the manors in 1086 Domesday Book .

Early developments

The parish church, St Martin’s, has been dated to the mid-13th century . An earlier church is believed to have been built during the Norman period . The name St. Martin was given to the church by the monks of the Bec Abbey .

Urban development

Bishop Winnington Ingram School was established by the vestry of St Martin’s church in 1812 . The school had 111 pupils by 1845 but fell into a state of disrepair until its rebuilding in 1931 .

Ruislip landmarks

Village square

The Duck House restaurant and Swan public house are Grade II listed buildings in Ruislip . The village water pump was sunk in the centre of the square in 1864 to a depth of 105 feet (32 m) 9 inches (230 mm)

Manor Farm

Manor Farm site incorporates the remains of settlements dating back to the 9th century . A working farm until the 1930s, the farm was let by King’s College, Cambridge, the owners of the land from 1500 to the mid 20th century. The farm was refurbished between 2007 and 2008 with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund .

Ruislip Lido

Ruislip Lido was established as a reservoir to feed the Grand Union Canal . Work began in 1811 but was unsuccessful as a canal feeder lake . It was reconstructed as a pleasure resort in 1933 .

Orchard Hotel

Albert Cross built a bungalow from where teas were served to day-trippers . It soon became the Orchard Hotel, which soon became an Ansells licensed bar . During the Battle of Britain, the pilots of No. 303 Polish Fighter Squadron celebrated many of their successes in battle there .

Northwood Cemetery, London Northwood Cemetery opened in 1915 as a result of population growth in the Northwood area . The land was once part of Ruislip Common, and covers over 15 acres of land . Access to the cemetery is from Chestnut Avenue .

Hilltop F.C. Hilltop Football Club is a football club based in Stonebridge, London. They groundshare with Hillingdon Borough at the Middlesex Stadium. They are currently members of the Combined Counties League Division One.
