The name “Rottington” comes from a farm or settlement connected with Rot(t)a. In 1762 the area became the property of Sir James Lowther. In 1866 Rottington became a civil parish in its own right. In 1974 the parish was abolished and merged with St Bees.

Mirehouse is 1.5 miles south of the town of Whitehaven near the A595 road. The ward was 4,498 at the 2011 census. The West was referred to 09 side and the East as 07 side.
