Ropley history


In the Domesday Book Ropley was part of the “Hundred of Bishops Sutton” (or “Ashley”) The land is noted as having provided the honey for William the Conqueror’s mead. The land was owned by the Gervase family who gave some land to William of Wykeham in the 14th century, who was a Bishop of Winchester and the founder of Winchester College. In the 15th century some of the land was acquired by Magdalen College, Oxford.

The vicar of Ropley from 1796 to 1811 was the Reverend William Howley, who succeeded his father in the post. Howley went on to serve as a Canon of Christ Church, Regius Professor of Divinity at Oxford University, Bishop of London, and Archbishop of Canterbury.

There are numerous old buildings in the village, including a number of old buildings. The village was built in the 1930s and is now a tourist attraction. There are many old buildings, including some of the village’s oldest buildings.
