Early settlements
Purley has been settled since at least Saxon times. The original settlements were based on Purley Magna and Purley Parva. Ownership of these manors changed several times over successive centuries. It remained almost entirely agricultural until development began in the 20th century.
Buildings
Purley Magna, Purley Parva and Purley La Hyde manor houses were built in medieval times.
