The earliest known settlement was founded by the Catuvellauni, Celts from north-eastern France. By 200AD the Romans had built a town, at the north of the current village, called Ad Fines. It was a regional capital and was also the start point for the roads to St Albans and Baldock – all-important pre-Roman Celtic centres.

East Hertfordshire The district was formed on 1 April 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972. By area it is the largest of the ten local government districts in Hertfordshire. At the 2011 Census, the population of the district was 137,687.

Braughing Braughing is a village and civil parish, in East Hertfordshire. It is located between the rivers Quin and Rib. The population at the 2011 Census was 1,203. This was a rural district from 1935 to 1974.
