In 1891, seven clergymen, including Thomas Morris of Pontyglasier, were charged with beating a bailiff attempting to recover tithe arrears. They were remanded on bail of £40 each and appeared before magistrates a month later. The Reverend Morris was accused of knocking the bailiff’s hat off three times during a scuffle. Magistrates found the assault proved against three of the defendants, including Morris.
