Pinhoe is mentioned as ‘Pinnoch’ in the Great Domesday Book compiled in 1086. In 1001, the Danes, having landed at Exmouth, marched to Exeter, which they besieged. At Pinhoe, they were confronted by Cola, the Saxon King Ethelred’s commander-in-chief, with a hastily assembled force. The actual site of the battle is said to be in or near Mincimore copse.

Pinhoe geography / climate

Overlooking the village sits St. Michael and All Angels church in its current form, largely dating from the 15th Century. For several years, the annual Great West Run (half marathon) has extended out to Pinhoe. The toughest part of the course used to be the uphill section along Chancel Lane, which competitors had to tackle twice.

Digby Hospital Digby Hospital was a mental health facility in Digby, Devon, England. It was built in the 1930s and was located in the town of Digby.

Stoke Canon Stoke Canon is a small village and civil parish near the confluence of the rivers Exe and Culm on the main A396 between Exeter and Tiverton in Devon. At the 2001 census it had a population of 660. The population was unchanged in 2011 but the village forms the major part of the Exe Valley electoral ward.

Broadclyst Broadclyst is a village and civil parish in the East Devon local government district. In 2001 its population was 2,830, reducing at the 2011 Census to 1,467. An electoral ward with the same name exists whose population at the above census was 4,842.
