The hamlet appears to get its name from the small stream “Pick Burn” (or river Pick) which flows through it on its way to Highfields Lake, in the Woodlands wildlife park. At the time of Kirkby’s Inquest, Pickburn was held by the Wasteneys and the Lyvets.

Woodlands is a model village 3 miles (5 km) north of Doncaster in South Yorkshire. The colliery village was designed and built in the early 20th century by architect Percy Houfton as tied cottages for the miners of the neighbouring Brodsworth Colliery.

Pickburn photo St Chad’s Hostel
St Chad’s Hostel opened in 1902 by Frederick Samuel Willoughby, vicar of Hooton Pagnell. The hostel closed in 1916, when its buildings were requisitioned as a war hospital. All teaching moved to Durham, where the hostel’s sister institution survives.
