Pen Dinas is the largest Iron Age hillfort in Ceredigion. Estimated to have been first built around 400 BC. People have lived in and around Penparcau for over two thousand years.

Mesolithic

There is evidence that during the Mesolithic Age the area of Tan-y-Bwlch at the foot of Pen Dinas (Penparcau) was used as a flint knapping floor for hunter-gatherers making weapons from flint that was deposited as the ice retreated.

Bronze and Iron Ages

A Bronze Age standing stone is also referenced as being in Penparcau in the Ceredigion County History (Volume 1) and the Dyfed Archaeological records. The remains of a medieval ringfort believed to be the castle from which Princess Nest was abducted is now on private land.

Modern History

Pen Dinas is now more popular as a tourist attraction for walkers and used in a more sedate manner for paragliding. A distinctive memorial to the Duke of Wellington in the shape of an upturned cannon was built on the hilltop in 1852. In the 18th century, smuggling was a key part of the economy, with tea, salt, rum and tobacco being smuggled into the local area.

Thomas Parry Library Thomas Parry Library is part of the library of the University of Wales Aberystwyth. It serves the Department of Information Studies, Department of Law and Criminology and School of Management & Business.

Penparcau F.C. Penparcau Football Club are a Welsh football club. They currently play in the Ardal Leagues North East, the third tier of the Welsh football league. The club was reformed in the summer of 2017 and played in the Aberystwyth League Division One.

Nanteos Mansion Nanteos is an 18th-century former country house in Llanbadarn-y-Creuddyn, near Aberystwyth, Ceredigion, Wales. The current building was constructed between 1738 and 1757 for the Powell family. The family occupied the house for some 200 years up until the last of the Powells, Margaret Powell, died in 1951.

Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales was established in 1908. It is a Welsh Government sponsored body concerned with some aspects of the archaeological, architectural and historic environment of Wales.

Radio Bronglais Radio Bronglais is one of the oldest hospital radio stations in the UK. It transmits music and live radio shows twenty four hours a day, on a LPFM frequency of 87.8FM.

Aberystwyth power station Aberystwyth power station supplied electricity to the town from 1895 to the 1970s. The oil-engine station was operated by a succession of private and public owners. The power station was redeveloped as demand for electricity grew and old plant was replaced.

Swyddfa’r Sir Swyddfa’r Sir is a Grade II listed former hotel, former main offices of Ceredigion County Council and former Magistrates Court building. It is well known as the outside of the police station in BBC Wales police television series Y Gwyll (Hinterland)

Constitution Hill, Aberystwyth Constitution Hill is a hill in the Welsh town of Aberystwyth, situated to the north of the town. It overlooks Cardigan Bay in Ceredigion, Wales, running between the town and the coastal settlements Borth and Clarach. The site provides good views as far as Snowdonia National Park and north Pembrokeshire.
