Pembrey history

The name Pembrey is an Anglicisation of the Welsh, Pen-bre. The coastline began its retreat 6,000 years ago, revealing land which shows human occupation since the Iron Age. Roman pottery remains have been unearthed in the oldest parts of the village. The population of the region was known to the Romans as Demetae.

Manor families

Ashburnham Golf Club championship course is the area’s main sporting attraction. Pembrey was dominated by at least one leading family in the early 20th century. Latest of these was the Ashburnam family who lived until the 1920s at Pembry House, lost to fire 50 years ago.

Military and RAF Pembrey

RAF Pembrey played a role in Britain’s defences as home to fighter and bomber aircraft. The RAF Red Arrows aerobatics display team performed over Kidwelly’s carnival, with many of their stunts taking place over the village itself. A Royal Ordnance Factory provided high explosives for Britain’s war effort.
