Initially a market town, Peebles played a role in the woollen industry of the Borders during the 19th and early-20th centuries. Most mills closed by the 1960s, although the last one remained open until 2015. The town serves as home to many people who commute to work in Edinburgh.

Peebles Hydro Peebles Hydro is one of two hydropathic hotels left in Scotland. The hotel opened in 1881, but burnt down and was rebuilt in 1907. It served as a hospital for injured service personnel during the First World War.

Venlaw Venlaw Castle, also known as Smithfield Castle, lies north of Peebles in the Borders of Scotland. It was designated in 1971 as a Category A listed building in 1971.

Neidpath Castle Neidpath Castle is an L-plan rubble-built tower house overlooking the River Tweed in the Borders of Scotland. The castle is both a wedding venue and filming location.

Horsburgh Castle Horsburgh Castle, also known as Horsbrugh Castle, is a ruined tower house castle by the River Tweed, on the A72 road from Peebles to Galashiels, near Glentress in the Scottish Borders area of Scotland. The ruins date from the 16th century and were built by the Horsburgs.
