Owlpen history

There are records of the de Olepenne family settled at Owlpen by 1174. They were local landowners, benefactors to abbeys and hospitals, and henchmen to their feudal overlords. In 1464, the male line failed after twelve generations of Olpennes, and the manor and lands passed to the Daunt family. The main line failed on the death of Thomas Daunt VI in 1803 when the Stoughton family, Anglo-Irish landowners from County Kerry, inherited.

Owlpen Manor

Owlpen Manor is a Grade I listed manor house and home of Sir Nicholas and Lady Karin Mander. Tudor manor and early 17th-century terraced gardens have been open to the public since 1966. Listed buildings on the estate include the Grist Mill (1728) and Court House (c. 1620)

Owlpen House

The Stoughton family built a new mansion c. 1848 called Owlpen House, one mile (1.6 km) to the east of the original settlement, to the Italianate designs of Samuel Sanders Teulon. It was demolished in 1955–1956 for the value of its building materials.

Owlpen Church

The Church of the Holy Cross was first recorded in 1262. The nave was rebuilt by Samuel Manning (Senior) in 1828. The chancel was added with restoration by James Piers St Aubyn in 1876. It has been described as ‘the most elaborate Victorian-Edwardian interior in the Cotswolds’

Uley Bury Uley Bury is an impressive multi-vallate, scarp-edge Iron Age hill fort dating from around 300 B.C. Standing some 750 feet (235 metres) above sea level it has views over the Severn Vale.

Stouts Hill Stouts Hill is an 18th-Century Gothic revival country house situated in the Cotswolds. It was built for the Gyde family of local weavers in 1743, the design being attributed to William Halfpenny. From 1935 until 1979 it was let for use as a private boys’ preparatory school in which some 100 pupils were boarders.

Kingscote Park, Gloucestershire Kingscote Park is a grade II listed Grade II listed country estate. The original Kingcote Cottage was demolished in 1951. The estate was held by the Kingscotes from the 12th century and is mentioned in the Domesday Book.

Shortwood United F.C. Shortwood United Football Club is a football club based in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire, England. The club are currently members of the Hellenic League Division One.

Coaley Wood Quarries Coaley Wood Quarries (grid reference ST786996) is a 4.85-hectare (12.0-acre) geological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Gloucestershire. The quarries lie within the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Easter Park Farm Quarry Easter Park Farm Quarry (grid reference SO810009) is a 0.15-hectare (0.37-acre) geological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Gloucestershire. The site is listed in the ‘Stroud District’ Local Plan, adopted November 2005, as an SSSI and a Regionally Important Geological Site (RIGS)

Woodchester Park SSSI Woodchester Park (grid reference SO820014) is a 214.9-hectare (531-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Gloucestershire, notified in 1966.
