Overseal history

Overseal’s history is inseparable from the nearby village of Netherseal (approximately 1.5 miles southwest) Historically forming a single parish and township, the two settlements have been known by various names. During the reign of Henry III, the manors were given by William de Meisham as a dowry for his daughter, Godehouda, on the occasion of her marriage to William de Appleby Magna.

Churches

The village church is dedicated to St Matthew. A new church was built in 1840–1841 on land donated by Elizabeth Pycroft, who also gave money for its construction. The church is Grade II listed.

Overseal geography / climate

Overeseal lies at almost the same latitude (52.735°N) as Shrewsbury, Shropshire and Barmouth, Gwynedd. The village was once part of the district of Seal, which included a number of settlements, many of which form Netherseal and Overseal in modern times. The small hamlet of Seale is approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) south of the village, marking the border with Leicestershire.

Gresley Rovers F.C. Gresley Rovers play in the United Counties League Premier Division North, playing their home games at the Moat Ground. The club were reformed in 2009 under the name of Gresleys F.C. In July 2020 the club readopted their original name, Gresly Rovers.

Gresley Priory Priory was a monastery of Augustinian Canons regular in Church Gresley, Derbyshire. Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the priory church became the village’s parish church of St George and St Mary.

St George and St Mary’s Church, Church Gresley St George and St Mary’s Church, Church Gresley is a Grade II* listed parish church in Derbyshire. It was built in the 1930s and is located in Church Gresley.

St Michael’s Church, Stretton en le Field St Michael’s Church is a redundant Anglican church in the village of Stretton en le Field, Leicestershire, England (grid reference SK303119) It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building.

Moira Furnace Moira Furnace is a nineteenth-century iron-making blast furnace located in Moira, Leicestershire, on the banks of the Ashby-de-la-Zouch Canal. Built by the Earl of Moira in 1804, the building has been preserved as a museum featuring lime kilns and craft workshops.

St Peter’s Church, Netherseal St Peter’s Church is a Grade II* listed parish church in Netherseal, Derbyshire. It was built in the 1930s and is now a Grade I listed parish.
