Industrial history
Coal measures of the Lancashire Coalfield were mined extensively at the Orrell Collieries between 1740 and 1850 . A tramroad modelled on John Blenkinsop’s railway at Middleton was built in 1812 from the pits to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Crooke . A cottage nail making industry flourished at the same time .
