The estate was known as Orceard and given by King Æthelwulf of Wessex to Taunton’s minster church in 854. The village takes the second part of its name from the Portman family one of the earliest prominent members of which was Chief Justice of the King’s Bench.

Tudor Tavern, Taunton Tudor Tavern at No 15 Fore Street, Taunton, Somerset, has been designated as a Grade I listed building. Built in 1578, the house is three storeys high of a timber-frame construction with jettied first and second floors.
