Old Drumchapel history
In the mid 19th century, Drumchapel was part of New Kilpatrick and consisted of two small coal mines. When this closed in May 1891 the owners of the Cowdenhill and Garscadden Estates encouraged builders to erect large semi-detached stone villas. Other amenities were built to encourage housebuilders to the area. The original Blairdardie School opened in 1780 at Lock 35 on the Forth and Clyde Canal.
