Octon is recorded in the 11th-century Domesday Book as “Ocheton” The village is thought likely to have been depopulated as a result of the Black Death. By the 19th century the village was reduced to a small farming hamlet. The modern village is at the same location as the reduced medieval village.

Great Wold Valley The Great Wold Valley is the largest and broadest of the valleys cutting into the Yorkshire Wolds in northern England. It carries the Gypsey Race, an intermittent stream, which runs from its source near Wharram-le-Street eastwards along and through the northern Yorks to reach the sea at Bridlington. It is known that it was an important place of worship during Neolithic times.
