Renfrew trading company established a storehouse there around 1714, as a local outlet for its merchandise. The custom-house was not deemed necessary until 1736, with “Oban being reckoned a proper place for clearing out vessels for the herring fishery”

Oban is considered the home of the Royal National M�òd, since it was first held there in 1892. The town hosted the centenary Mod in 1992 and in 2003 the 100th Mod. The Mod is held in Oban roughly every 6–8 years, and has last been held in October 2015.

Oban Hydro The Oban Hills Hydropathic Sanatorium was a proposed hotel in Oban, Scotland . Construction of the hotel began in 1881 on a hill east of the downtown overlooking the town and the harbour . The hotel was never completed due to financial difficulties and currently lies in ruins .

McCaig’s Tower McCaig’s Tower is a Grade B Listed historic monument in Oban, Argyll . It is built of Bonawe granite taken from quarries across Airds Bay, on Loch Etive, from Muckairn .
