North Lopham history

North Lopham was first mentioned in the Little Doomsday Book of 1086 and was referred to as ‘Lopham Alia’ This Latin name can be translated into ‘Loppa’s homestead’ The parish was noted for the production of fine linen during the 16th and 18th century. In 1831, the parish had a population of 807 and contained a total of 121 houses. The population decreased from 832 in 1851 to 461 in 1961.

Memorial to American air crash

18 American servicemen died when two aircraft collided over North Lopham, Norfolk. The airmen belonged to the 96th bombardment group which was based in Snetterton, Norfolk, during the Second World War. A memorial, designed by Richard Vere, now stands in the village to commemorate the incident.

War Memorial

The base of the memorial contains the names of the 38 men and an inscription which reads: “In Memory of the Men of North Lopham who gave their lives for their Country 1914–1919. There’s some corner of a foreign field that is forever England. Greater love hath no man than this.”

Church of St. Nicholas

This church consists of a 14th-century nave with the south isle and porch being constructed in the middle of the 14th century. The west tower was constructed in three stages and was completed in 1526. During the 19th century, alterations were made to the structure including all the roofs and the north vestry.

Kenninghall Kenninghall is a village and civil parish in Norfolk, England, with a population of 950 at the 2011 census. It is home to the kings of East Anglia, after the Norman invasion of 1066 William the Conqueror granted the estate to William of Albany and his heirs.

Guiltcross Rural District Guiltcross Rural District was a rural district in Norfolk from 1894 to 1902. It lay in the southern part of Norfolk between Thetford and Diss. In 1902, the district was abolished and its territory was divided.
