Early history

Netherton means ‘lower farm’ in Old English. For most of its history, it was a small village centred around the point where a brook crossed the Baptist End Road. The village was included in the Manor of Dudley, a Lordship of the Barons of Dudley who once owned a manor house in the area.

Industrial Age

Netherton expanded rapidly in the industrial age and the thick seams of coal underlying the region were extensively mined. Blast furnaces were constructed in for iron making and the area became home to many industries including chain making, anchor making, nail making, brick making, enamelling, and the construction of boilers. In the mid-19th century, the area was notorious for its bad sanitary conditions.

Modern history

Dudley Council sought to redevelop areas of Netherton for housing. Some of the first council houses were constructed around Netherton Park in the early 1920s. Other former industrial sites were transformed into parkland or nature reserves.

Saltwells Local Nature Reserve Saltwells Local Nature Reserve is situated in the Netherton area of Dudley Metropolitan Borough in West Midlands. The reserve, created in 1981, covers 247 acres and includes part of Netherton Hill within its boundaries.

Dudley Town F.C. Dudley Town Football Club is one of the oldest non-league teams in the Midlands region, having been established in 1888. They are members of the Midland League Division One, although they have reached as high as the Premier Division of the Southern League. In 1976 they reached the first round proper of the FA Cup, when they took Football League Third Division team York City to a replay.
