The name Mawdesley is thought to have originated in the reign of Edward I (1272–1308) The suffix -ley describes a field, meadow or clearing. Records show that a manor existed in 1250 AD on the site of the present Mawdeley Hall.

The village sits on a low rise from the surrounding flat mossland of Mawdesley Moss. The nearest hill, Harrock Hill (515 ft) belongs to the neighbouring parishes of Hilldale and Wrightington. Rufford Old Hall is a National Trust property in Rufford, Lancashire. Built in about 1530 for Sir Robert Hesketh, only the Great Hall survives from the original structure. A brick-built wing in the Jacobean style was added in 1661, at right angles to Great Hall. The hall’s cottage, coach house and stables, about ten metres to the east, are designated Grade II.
