Maresfield history


Maresfield is an old village (its church was founded in 1100; the present nave and tower were built between 1375 and 1415. There was a Roman settlement, including a bloomery, and later a Norman village grew up around the church. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the Wealden iron industry was flourishing.

Until 1926, it was a largely agricultural village in Maresfield Park House. The estate was confiscated in 1914 by the government after the start of World War I. In the First World War, a large army camp was developed and later on parts of the village were developed as married quarters for soldiers.

Maresfield geography / climate

Maresfield is on the southern edge of Ashdown Forest which was a deer hunting reserve from the time of King Edward II. The Site of Special Scientific Interest Rock Wood falls within the parish. Rock Wood is of biological interest, with uncommon mosses and ferns growing alongside the stream which flows through the site.

Nutley

Nutley is a village on the main road (A22) north of Maresfield. It has its own church, dedicated to St James the Less.

Fairwarp

Fairwarp is a small village directly north of Maresfield. The church is Christ Church in the village of Christchurch, near to Maresfields. The village has a population of 4,500.

Uckfield Baptist Church was founded in 1785 by seceders from the nearby Five Ash Down Independent Chapel. The church had its own chapel from 1789 until 2005, when the building closed and was sold for residential conversion. The “simple brick chapel” was rebuilt in 1874 and has been listed at Grade II.
